Can someone explain the point of the SATs, GRE, ACT etc, to a baffled British person?

The tests ensure a minimal acceptable level of knowledge to get into college, they are not deterministic of your capabilities. You will take a separate english and math placement test to determine at what level of college courses you should begin. For someone entering the arts math, science, and language skills are not as important as they would be for someone entering the sciences.
