Any tips for growing "Patio Tomatoes"?

I am a beginner gardener. I am doing container gardening because I have a small balcony space to work with. Yesterday, I planted sweet basil and patio tomatoes together, but I think the container I bought is too small, although the gentleman at Lowe's said it would be ok (I think it is 8 1/2" terra cotta azalea pot) What do you think? Should I buy a larger pot? Also, do you think I will need a cage to go over the tomatoes even though they are a smaller variety? Thanks!
